Park and Recreation Committee - Getting Involved

Are you looking for an opportunity to get involved with your local community? The Williamstown Township Park and Recreation Committee (PRC) may be just the place for you to get your feet wet. The PRC offers an informal atmosphere to participate and offer input for improvement to our park. The committee meets just once a month, on the second Wednesday, at 7:00 at the Williamstown Township HalL Over the years the committee has proposed and reviewed many improvements to the Township's park on Grand River Avenue including: an improved trail system, sledding hill, soccer and softball fields, tree planting, prairie burns, interpretive trail, bird houses, landscaping and more. If these activities interest you, please consider joining our committee by coming to our next meeting.

Park Information

Visitors to the Community Park will notice that there are new signs directing dog owners to walk their dogs on leash along the newly mowed trail around the field in the southwest corner of the park. The Township is encouraging dog owners to use this area of the Community Park where they can enjoy walks with their dogs and meet other dog lovers.

Also recently added are two plastic containers with blue lids that have been fixed to the posts close to the entrances to the dog walking area. These boxes are filled with plastic baggies for use by owners to pick up their doggies "doggie doos".

A doggie-doo pick-up system. Take a baggie; put your hand into the baggie; pick up your dogs' feces; turn the baggie inside out; tie and deposit into one of the convenient trashcans. Picking up your dogs' feces is a courtesy that any responsible dog owner should automatically extend to other park users. It is objectionable and offensive for visitors there to enjoy nature, to constantly watch where they are treading along the trail. Of course, there are many dog owners who bring their own baggies and pick up as a general rule. We thank those thoughtful owners.

Leash Law: Ingham County law requires all dogs to be leashed and under the owners control at all times, unless in a fenced area. Because of this law any future moves towards a full-blown dog park will need to include a fully fenced area. So any further development will need the concerted efforts of those interested to organize and raise money for fencing and other amenities. An Off Leash Dog Park could be a long-term goal that will be attainable only if there is enough active interest.

In the meantime however, the new trail will be mowed on a regular basis and should be used, not only by dogs and their owners, but also as an extension to the trail system. We hope it will be enjoyed by all
