HISTORICAL COMMITTEE UPDATE May 2007 Information submitted by Clay Braden By the time you read this update the roof on the Branch School will be completed. There was a final crimping to be done to finish the job. The school bell cupola is the next priority on our "to do" list. We also plan to demolish the back of the school building and we are studying the building of a period correct addition. The addition will provide housing for required restroom facilities which will allow the school to be used nearly year round for activities and student study groups. Thanks to Shawn Canfield, we have received artifacts found on the Branch School grounds (i.e. a girl's ruby ring and three old coins.) Shawn has agreed to help us in our search endeavors. We are also searching for an old top view case (preferable 1 or 2 feet) to display these type of items. In addition, we still need school day items such as books, rulers, pens, lunch pails, pictures, desks, a room size flag pole, and almost anything you would find in a country school of this era (mid to late 1800's.) If you are able to help please call. The committee is looking for associate members to help with the school restoration, the development of historical projects, and to interview residents for pertinent information. Eventually we will need docents to oversee the Branch School activities. The renovation of the school is the first step in a full appreciation of history of Williamstown Township and the rural lifestyles of our ancestors.
